Fashions keep changing with time but the essential and basic factors remain unchanged. For centuries there have been women with scanty hair who have used different types of hair-pieces to add artificial volume to their scanty hair. Only the technology keeps changing. The type of hairstyle may change but the requirement of basic implements remains unchanged.

Aplethora of hair care products have made their entry into the market. There is a lot of confusion in the minds of many women about their use, terminology and benefits. Till recently, words like Gel, Mousse, Spritz were unheard of but today's youngsters use these words with regular frequency. To the uninitiated person, there is a major confusion about these terms. One must know the products that are available today and make use of them in the right manner. These products can bring about a sea change in one's hairstyle, when used correctly.

Types of Hair Styles

VERY SHORT - The weight line of the hair is at or above the ear line.
SHORT - The cut line is between the ear and the jaw line.
MEDIUM - The weight line is between the jaw and the shoulder.
LONG - Below the shoulder.

When using styling products like gels, mousses and sprays, remember to use them sparingly to avoid weighing down of the hair and causing heavy build-up. A small blob of gel is enough for short hair. You can double that amount for long hair. But apply only half the amount at first, and then apply the rest so that the product is evenly distributed throughout the hair.

Chin length hair has to be trimmed every 6.-8 weeks. This is the best style for those who don't like frequent cuts and don't have the time to style.

Medium length hair has to be cut every 6 weeks. This is mainly suitable for women who like long hair and the versatility it offers in styling. It should be conditioned every week.

Short hair with steps should be trimmed every 4 weeks. This is most suitable for the women who do not like any fussy styling and don't mind frequent trims.

Shape and Color of your Hair

Straight hair or curly hair? Curly hair has a flattened cross-section while straight hair has a circular one. The basic hair fonn is controlled by a number of genes - but this hair form is readily altered by chemicals present in perming and straightening lotions.

Thick hair or fme hair? Except forpalms, soles and lips, hair is present all over the body. In some areas itis long, thick and dark - this is the tenninal hair seen on the scalp, on the face of adult men and in the axilla and pubic region of adults; some tenninal hair are also present on the anns, legs and body. The hair on the rest of the skin is short, fine, light, and inconspicuous: this type of hair is called the vellus hair.

Sometimes hair which is nonnally supposed to be fine and inconspicuous becomes visible; for instance terminal hair appears on the face of women in a condition called hirsutism. On the other hand, sometimes terminal hair gets converted into fine vellus hair - this happens in the all familiar baldness seen in men.

Colour of your hair : The colour of your hair depends on the number, size and distribution of pigment granules inthe cortex and the nature of the pigment present. The granules in black, blonde and red hair are different chemically: the brown black hair is due to eumelanin, the blonde hair contains phaeomelanin and red hair erythromelanin.

It is thought that a number of genes influence the colour of the hair- some of these genes also influence other inherited characteristics as well: the association between hair colour and hair fonn is well established. There is also an obvious association between hair colour and the colour of the eyes, the colour of the skin and the presence of freckles.

Though, the basic colour of your hair is detennined by your genes, this colour is readily altered by colouring agents. It can be lightened using bleaches, highlighted by a variety of agents and darkened by several types of natural and synthetic hairdyes.
